Uses of TRIWIS
A vasoactive agent used to support blood pressure and cardiac output in shock. This is the sharp end of the intensive care formulary: these drugs are titrated continuously against a measured response.
They are given by controlled infusion through a pump, and noradrenaline in particular is given by central line wherever possible because extravasation from a peripheral cannula can cause local tissue necrosis. Every ICU keeps a standing stock.
- Septic shock and other vasodilatory shock, for the vasopressors
- Low cardiac output states and cardiogenic shock, for the inotropes
- Acute variceal bleeding and hepatorenal syndrome, for terlipressin
- Haemodynamic support during and after major surgery
