Uses of Cortiark
A systemic corticosteroid with both anti inflammatory and immunosuppressive effect. The injectable form is used where a rapid effect is needed or the oral route is unavailable.
The two salts behave differently and are not interchangeable. The succinate is water soluble and acts quickly, which is the emergency presentation. The acetate is a suspension formulated for slow release from a depot and is used for intra articular and intramuscular depot injection, never intravenously.
- Acute severe asthma and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Severe allergic and anaphylactic reactions, alongside adrenaline
- Autoimmune and inflammatory disease flares
- Adrenal insufficiency replacement, for hydrocortisone
- Intra articular and soft tissue injection, for the depot acetate presentations
