Uses of CLOVAR
A nucleoside analogue antiviral active against herpes simplex and varicella zoster virus. The intravenous form is used where infection is severe, disseminated, or involves the central nervous system.
It is selective in a useful way: activation depends on a viral enzyme, so it concentrates its effect in infected cells and largely leaves uninfected ones alone.
- Herpes simplex encephalitis
- Severe or disseminated herpes simplex infection
- Varicella zoster infection in immunocompromised patients
- Severe primary genital herpes, as directed
