Acetylcysteine, which has two quite separate uses: as the antidote in paracetamol overdose, and as a mucolytic.
The antidote role is the one that matters most in an emergency department, and it is time critical. It works by restoring the liver’s own capacity to detoxify the reactive metabolite that causes the damage.
